The Kitchen Floor - ... was disgusting. The Mexican tile was part of a late-1980s remodeling project by the former owners, and I'm sure it looked really cutting-edge at the time. By the time we moved in, though, the tile was cracking and discolored, and the grout was horribly stained. The result: a floor that always looked dirty and usually was, because let's face it, there wasn't a lot of incentive to scrub it since it looked just as bad afterward. It's going to be a huge hassle to redo the flooring in this part of the house, and I wanted a quick fix before we hosted my brother's wedding reception in September 2003. So I scrubbed it down with Comet, taped off each tile, and painted the grout with a special colorant. A couple of coats of sealer gave it a nice little shine and will (hopefully) prevent the grout getting stained again before we have a chance to replace the flooring. This was less disruptive (and certainly cheaper) than replacing the flooring, but it sucked up two weeks of my (and part of my sister's!) life energy. The result is pretty nice, but it wasn't a particularly enjoyable way to squander the final weeks of my summer vacation.
